Introduction
AEWA International Single Species Working Groups are being established under the framework of selected AEWA Single Species Action and Management Plans. These working groups are the inter-governmental bodies responsible for coordinating and guiding the implementation of a variety of International Single Species Action and Management Plans. Working groups consist of representatives from all range states covered by the Action or Management Plans in question.
The AEWA Svalbard Pink-footed Goose International Working Group
The AEWA Svalbard Pink-footed Goose International Working Group (SPfG IWG) was convened by the UNEP/AEWA Secretariat in 2012 and consists of appointed representatives from the four countries identified as range states for the species in the International Species Management Plan for the Svalbard population of the pink-footed goose.
Each range state has been requested to designate two representatives to the group:
The appointed National Focal Points are subsequently expected to lead the implementation of the Svalbard Pink-footed Goose International Species Management Plan in their respective countries.
The range state authorities are also able to optionally invite representatives of national organisations as part of their national delegations. In addition, the range states have confirmed the following international organizations as observers to the working group: Wetlands International and the Federation of Associations for Hunting and Conservation of the European Union (FACE). Observers provide valuable advice and expertise during meetings of the Working Group and in the inter-sessional periods. Details of members and observers of the working group can be found in the Membership section.
The work of the group is guided by Terms of Reference which were adopted at the Implementation Meeting of the AEWA International Species Management Plan (ISMP) for the Svalbard population of the Pink-footed Goose which took place in August 2012 in Longyearbyen, Svalbard.
The work of the international working group is supported and facilitated by a Coordination Unit as well as modelling work undertaken on contract by Dr. Fred A. Johnson, of the U.S. Geological Survey on the Adaptive Harvest Management strategy of the Svalbard pink-footed goose. For further information on the following please use the following links:
